Thriving iron ore and coal mining community of early 1900’s established by Colonel John Gordon Battelle five miles north of Valley Head.

The site of Battelle is fairly inaccessible by car. This photo was taken from a train while on an excursion to Chattanooga. Even thin there was nothing left of the early industrial community.
