1. "The Monastery" Marker
Inscription. First Carmel in U.S. Founded October 15, 1790, by four Carmelites from Belgium three of them natives of Maryland. Nuns moved to Baltimore Sept. 13, 1831. The restorers of Mt. Carmel in Md Recoverd site March 27, 1935. Restored buildings 1937.
 
Erected by State Roads Commission of Maryland.
 
Location. 38° 33.41′ N, 77° 0.344′ W. Marker is in La Plata, Maryland, in Charles County. Marker is at the intersection of Mitchell Road and Mount Carmel Road, on the right when traveling north on Mitchell Road. Touch for map. It is directly across the street from the south entrance of the College of Southern Maryland, LaPlata campus. Marker is in this post office area: La Plata MD 20646, United States of America.
