1. Independence Marker
Inscription. This place became the county seat of Grayson County in 1850; the first case was tried in the newly erected courthouse in 1851. The present courthouse was built in 1908. Independence was incorporated in 1934.
 
Erected 1941 by Virginia Conversation Commission. (Marker Number U-22.)
 
Location. 36° 37.349′ N, 81° 9.112′ W. Marker is in Independence, Virginia, in Grayson County. Marker is at the intersection of East Main Street (U.S. 58) and North Independence Avenue (U.S. 21), on the left when traveling west on East Main Street. Touch for map. It is at the corner of the courthouse lawn. Marker is in this post office area: Independence VA 24348, United States of America.
