Regarding Newcastle Portuguese Hall. (from the supplemental plaque next to the door) The Newcastle Portuguese Hall was built in 1918 by the Portuguese community. The lot for the hall was donated by Manuel L. & Mary Z. Perry, brother & sister, to three Portuguese fraternal lodges, I.D.E.S. Council No. 42, S.P.R.S.I. Council No, 26 and U.P.E.C. Council No. 58.

2. Newcastle Portuguese Hall Marker
It has been in use since then for lodge meetings, bridal showers, birthday and anniversary parties, card parties and the Portuguese folk dance, the “chamarrita”. The hall gained historical status with “State Point of Historic Interest” on November 14, 1981 and was placed on the “National Register of Historic Places” on March 25, 1982.
