Morvalden Ells was a small town newspaper editor who moved from Elmira to purchase the Watkins Glen Republican in 1856. Ells received permission to open Watkins Glen to the public, officially opening on July 4, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. In 1906 the State of New York purchased Watkins Glen for $46,512 as a state reservation, later making it a state park.
