(bottom left); For a meeting of Jack London and Ruskin Club in 1901, the menu included oysters on the half shell, striped bass a la Hollandaise, roast chicken, French fried potatoes, English peas, two flavors of ice cream, cakes and fresh fruit. (bottom center); For several years, the tiny turnstile entrance to the park was the city’s post office, the only one the city has ever had. (bottom right).

Piedmont Springs Clubhouse and Cafe. . On Saturday, May 5, 1898, a gala benefit for the Ladies’ Relief Society marked the opening of the Piedmont Springs Park by Frank C. Havens. Musicians played in a thatched bandstand while partygoers strolled through lighted pathways. Many guest dined in an elegant palm-filled room at the new Piedmont Springs Cafe while others sipped libations on the veranda overlooking the park. , ”Two or three hundred incandescent electric lights have been placed among the trees. The effect is very pretty, particularly when water is running over the waterfalls. The charge for admission at all times will be ten cents for adults and five cents for children.” The Oakland Enquirer
