1. Flag Of France Marker
Inscription. Although Spanish explorers probably saw the Baton Rouge bluffs from the river before Iberville landed here in 1699, Spain did not colonize the area. It became a French possession in 1682 when LaSalle claimed all the land drained by the Mississippi and named it Louisiana in honor of Louis XIV. The Bourbon flag flew over Baton Rouge beginning with the D'Artaguette Concession ca. 1722.
