Regarding Here Were Shot Four Patriots. The four Nicaraguans were shot by a firing squad, supposedly for helping a filibuster that wanted to desert Walker's forces. Unfortunately, the filibuster was a spy and part of an operation to seek out locals that were unsupportive of their invasion of Nicaragua. The execution was described in contemporary newspaper accounts by fellow filibuster and correspondent to the New Orleans Picayune, Charles Callahan.
