Inscription. The reading room building was constructed in Sayreville in 1883 by the Sayre and Fisher Company for use as a library and a hall. The first floor hall was used for meetings, sales promotions and employee functions. Later it was called Sayreville Hall because community meetings, grammar school graduations, sports events and silent movies took place there. The second floor library was intended for company use but students and residents were also permitted.

The exterior walls showcase a variety of company brick products and colors. The façade displays a pattern of square and clover-leaf ornamental bricks. A terracotta design located at the top of the façade includes a book, the words reading room, the letter S over F for Sayre and Fisher and the numbers for the year 1883.

In 1979 the reading room building was listed in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places because of its industrial, architectural and social significance.
