Inscription.

In 1836 the young state of Illinois staked its future on the construction of a water highway, the I&M Canal. In 1974 the state began establishing a system of recreational trails along the canal.
 
Erected by Illinois Dept of Natural Resources.
 
Location. 41° 35.464′ N, 88° 3.484′ W. Marker is in Lockport, Illinois, in Will County. Touch for map. Marker is along the canal trail, between the canal and the Gaylord Building. Marker is at or near this postal address: 200 West 8th Street, Lockport IL 60441, United States of America.
