1. Americans in British Uniform Marker

Inscription. Many of the men that went into battle for the British at Musgrove's Mill were Provincial soldiers. Provincials were Regular troops, meaning that they were trained and supplied by the British. They differed from Regular British soldiers, however, in that Provincial soldiers were American colonists.

There were at least three different Provincial units that fought at the Battle of Musgrove's Mill. They included the South Carolina Royalists, the 3rd Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers and the 1st Battalion, Delancey's Brigade of the New York Royalists. All had been involved in action in the Southern Campaign prior to Musgrove's Mill.

Marker can be reached from Horseshoe Falls Road (State Highway S-42-10) 1.4 miles south of State Highway 56, on the left when traveling south. On the left side is an illustration of Provincial (enlarged), Loyalist and Patriot soldiers by Darby Erd: "Provincial regiments formed early in the Revolutionary War, often involving Loyalists who had been forced into exile. The South Carolina Royalists was one such regiment, comprised of Loyalists from South Carolina's Tyger and Enoree river regions."
