1. Butterfield Overland Mail in Missouri — 1858-1861 Marker
Inscription. The John I. Smith Relay Station was 172 ½ miles from the Tipton Terminus and stood in northeast Barry County, about 7 miles west of Crane.
 
Erected 1958 by State Historical Society of Missouri.
 
Marker series. This marker is included in the Butterfield Overland Mail, and the Missouri, State Historical Society of marker series.
 
Location. 36° 52.164′ N, 93° 43.225′ W. Marker is near Aurora, Missouri, in Lawrence County. Marker is at the intersection of State Highway 39 and Farm Road 2035, on the left when traveling south on State Highway 39. Touch for map. The site of the Smith Relay Station is located three miles northeast of the marker. Farm Road 2035 adjacent to the marker follows the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail stage line.
