Wilcox Pond
Freshwater ponds are plentiful in the natural landscape of this region. The pond here in Wilcox Park is manmade, taking advantage of a natural depression. It was originally fed by a local abandoned stone quarry.
Freshwater ponds typically start out as open water and, over time, accumulate debris and wildlife, often turning into marshes and bogs. Man-made ponds require routine maintenance: annual cleaning to remove accumulated decaying matter, aeration through a fountain, replenishing water loss due to evaporation using a clean water source, periodic removal of invasive plants like the Eurasian watermilfoil, and, of course, snow removal for ice skating.
When the pond ice is determined to be thick enough for skating, the Park staff will post a notice. Otherwise please stay off, the center of the pond is 6 feet deep!
Aquatic Life in Wilcox Park
All the plants in the pond are native aquatic plants. Aquatic plants provide food for waterfowl and wildlife, protect small fish and create spawning habitats, act as refuges for zooplankton, and oxygenate water. Wilcox Park is home for American waterlilies in pink and white, Yellow Pond Lily, Pickerelweed with its purple flowers, and tall Cattails which filter the water and stabilize the pond bottom.
Turtles, fish and waterfowl enjoy the Pond. They are at their healthiest when allowed to forage for food on their own.
