Sárstátaire Éireannach
Bhí bá ar leith ag Dónall Uí Chonaill, 'an Fuascailteoir' agus athair ghluaiseacht neamhspleáchais na hÉireann le Doire Fhíonáin. Ba é an stocaireacht a rinne sé ba chúis le hachtú Acht Fhuascailt na gCaitliceach 1829, acht a d'fhág go raibh cead ag Caitlicigh cosúil leis féin suíocháin a bheith acu i bParlaiment na Breataine. Bhí sé ainmnithe fiú mar an chéad Rí ar an mBeilg.

Ag triall abhaile ar Dhoire Fhíonáin
Rugadh é gar do Chathair Saidhbhín sa bhliain 1775. Thug sé a chéad chuairt ar Dhoire Fhíonáin nuair a bhí sé ina leanbh agus bhí sé le haltramú ag an bhfear a bhí fostaithe ag a uncail le haire a thabhairt do na ba. Is Gaeilge amháin a labhair sé go dtí go raibh sé cúig bliana d'aois. Fágadh Tigh Mór Dhoire Fhíonáin aige le huacht in 1825. Bhíodh a fhios aige i gcónaí go raibh sé gar don bhaile, i ndiaidh dó a bheith ag filleadh ó Londain agus ó Bhaile Átha Cliath, nuair a shroich a chapall Marcaíocht Uí Chonaill, an rian garbh idir Bealach Chom an Chiste agus Doire Fhíonáin.

Laethanta saoire oibre

linn dó a bheith ag Doire Fhíonáin. Théadh seirbhíseach a mbíodh mála poist de pháipéir thábhachtacha aige sa tóir air nuair a bhíodh sé amuigh sna cnoic ag seilg.

A great Irish statesman
Derrydane was a special place for Daniel O'Connell, 'the Liberator' and father of the Irish independence movement. His campaigning pushed through the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829 which allowed Catholics like himself to take their seats in the British Parliament. He was even proposed as first King of Belgium.

Home to Derrynane
Born near Cahersiveen in 1775, he made his first journey to Derrynane as a baby to be fostered to his uncle's cowman. He spoke only Irish until he was five. He inherited Derrynane House in 1825. He knew that he was nearing home from his many travels to London and Dublin when his horse joined

O'Connell's Ride, the rough track from the Coomakista Pass to Derrynane.

A working holiday
O'Connell could not escape work even at Derrynane. A servant carrying a mailbag of important papers would seek him out when hunting in the hills.
