1. Apple Island Marker
Inscription. Apple Island is a 37-acre nature sanctuary at the center of Orchard Lake. Owned by West Bloomfield School District, it has officially been called Marjorie Ward Strong Woodland Sanctuary since 1970.

National Register of Historic Places

In 2018, the National Parks Service listed Apple Island in the National Register of Historic Places. It has been recognized for its archaeological significance, and a boulder monument is installed on the island.

Island History

The island has a rich history, from its formation during the recession of the region's last ice-age glacier to the presence of Native Americans to the inhabitation of various vacationers who eventually owned the island.

Tours of the Island

The annual Apple Island Tours take place on the second weekend of June. Group tours of Apple Island are also available. More information at www.gwbhs.org.
