1. Harper Baptist Seminary Marker
Inscription. Harper Baptist Seminary was organized here in 1941. The school's origin can be traced to Harper Baptist College, formerly located near Gloster in Amite County. Named in honor of Dr. Simon Harper, a former slave and community leader, the college was incorporated by the legislature in 1890 to educate African American youth. Following the third fire at the college, the property was sold and a new school was constructed here in 1942, retaining part of the original name.
