Troopers of the 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1898. The 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments were all African American Regiments that participated in the battles of San Juan Heights. Three troopers of the 10th: Edward L. Baker, Fritz Lee and William H. Tompkins were awarded the Medal of Honor for their selfless service to their comrades.

Sgt. George Berry, color guard for the 10th Cavalry Regiment who ran forward in a hailstorm of Spanish bullets and recovered the colors of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment from his fallen comrade. Sgt. Berry then charged up San Juan Hill planting the colors at the summit.
