His academic prowess surpassed his athletic ability, which was considerable. A member of the self-named "Root Hogs" which cleared the way for many of Charles Alexander's record setting performances, he was named All-American in 1978 and Academic All-American in 1977 and was two-time All-SEC pick, He went onto a successful career as an orthopedic surgeon.
