Monument Concept. Earth’s predictable path around the Sun allows us to know where the Sun’s shadow from a fixed object will fall at the same time each year. Key U.S. Military events are listed on placards below the Monument and identified by date markers on the Monument surface. Sunlight against the brass arcs over the Monument casts a shadow that centers on specific markers at the time and date listed for each event. Visit the Monument just prior to a listed date-time and watch as the Sun’s shadow moves to touch the marker for that event in U.S. Military History. ( right plaque )
