Inscription. This is another fine example of an Italianate Commercial building. It was constructed in 1904 for two men related by marriage and who belonged to the first Catholic families in the area. This style remained popular in Pendleton long after the East Coast abandoned it. Notice the parapet level decoration in the brick pattern. The first floor remains very true to its construction in 1904. The second floor contained a gymnasium/auditorium at one time, famous for boxing matches. A major flood of the Umatilla River occurred in June 1906. The water from the river flooded this building and rose two feet above the door thresholds. The Milarkey name was used previously on two buildings on Main St., immediately to the east of this structure.

Erected by City of Pendleton.
