Marker is at the intersection of Sherman Street (CanAm Highway) (U.S. 85) and Deadwood Street (CanAm Highway) (U.S. 85), on the right when traveling south on Sherman Street (CanAm Highway). Marker is a metal plaque mounted on a large boulder, beside the sidewalk, near the intersection, in front of Adams Memorial Hall. Touch for map. More about this marker. This appears to be a centennial marker, probably erected for the 100th anniversary of the Black Hills Pioneers in 1989.
 
Also see . . .  Society of Black Hills Pioneers. The Society began in 1889 because the prospectors felt an exclusive bond and wanted the world to remember they were the first. Membership qualification is that you must have had an ancestor, who was in the Black Hills prior to or at the time of the first federal census taken in June, 1880. The Black Hills area includes the counties of Lawrence, Meade, Butte, Pennington, Custer and Fall River in Dakota Territory and Crook or Weston counties in Wyoming Territory.
