St. Louis, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Moving Picture Tent
—Cherokee-Lemp Historic District —
Copying entrepreneurs across the nation, businessmen on Cherokee Street were converting commercial buildings into movie houses. On this section of Cherokee Street, now known as Antique Row, there were three places to see silent movies in 1909.
The 19th century storefronts at 1953-55 and 2131 Cherokee Street were converted into movie odeons. To meet the tremendous demand for moving pictures, a tent was constructed on the then-empty lot to your right, 2016 Cherokee, to serve as an instant theater.
After the evening meal, neighbors living in the flats and apartments surrounding Cherokee Street walked here to watch black and white, silent films starring the likes of Mary Pickford, and directed by early film-makers like D.W. Griffith.
