1. Market Square Presbyterian Church Marker
Inscription. Market Square Presbyterian Church was established in 1794 as the English Presbyterian Congregation of Harrisburg, the first of its denomination in the city. After meeting at various locations in the early years, the congregation erected its first building in 1806 one block south of here. A second building, constructed in 1842 on the same site, burned in 1858, prompting the congregation to relocate here. The present building was designed by architect Joseph C. Hoxie of Philadelphia and was dedicated on March 18, 1860. The main design emphasis is Romanesque Revival with exterior red brick and brownstone trim. The Gothic steeple rises to a height of 193 feet. The church is the oldest building on the square.
