1. Waring European Larch Marker
Inscription. In 1860, just five years after the founding of the Farmers' High School and a year after the first class was offered, this tree was planted by William G. Waring, professor of horticulture.

Native to northern and central Europe, the European larch has widely been planted throughout southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States. This large, graceful, deciduous conifer features luminous green needs in the spring that turn golden yellow in the fall before they are shed. Its genus name, Larix, is the old Latin term for the tree, and its species name, decidua, refers to the fact that larches are deciduous conifers.

Although commonly grown as an ornamental, the European larch has been harvested for its excellent timber and its aromatic resin, used in venetian turpentine, which has medicinal value.
