Skip Hoist, also, Oil Shed. . The blast furnace was charged with anthracite coal, limestone and iron ore. In order to get the raw materials to the top of the furnace stack, a steam powered device called a "skip hoist" was used. The hoist was an inclined rail that conveyed platforms from the stock shed to the top of the furnace. The concrete base of the hoist was located to the left of the Oil Shed. The Shed, one of the original structures that still stands, housed lubricants for the furnace. At the corners of the Oil Shed are concrete bases that supported the hoist's vertical trusses.
