Inscription. During his 35 years as a faculty member, administrator and president of Franklin & Marshall College, Richard Kneedler '65, P'98 devoted his extraordinary leadership abilities to transform his alma mater in a variety of significant ways.

One of his primary objectives was to enhance the fine and performing arts at the College. As president (1988-2002), he was instrumental in the creation of the arts cluster surrounding Spalding Plaza that includes the Ann and Richard Barshinger Center for Musical Arts in Hensel Hall, The Phillips Museum of Art in Steinman College Center, and the Roschel Performing Arts Center. He realized that, by placing the College's arts facilities adjacent to each other, Franklin & Marshall was creating the potential for a growing synergy from the arts community in the decades to come.

In recognition of Richard Kneedler's outstanding efforts on behalf of Franklin & Marshall, this sculpture garden was named and dedicated in his honor by a grateful College on May 7, 2002.
