1. Dickinson College Marker
Inscription. Dr. Benjamin Rush envisioned a new type of education for post-Revolutionary America, a useful education in the liberal arts. Rush, with the assistance of Col. John Montgomery of Carlisle, founded Dickinson College to prepare an engaged citizenry able to meet the leadership needs of the new nation. Chartered on September 9, 1783 and named for John Dickinson, the college was the first established west of the Susquehanna River.
 
Erected 2005 by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
 
Location. 40° 12.128′ N, 77° 11.733′ W. Marker is in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in Cumberland County. Marker is on High Street (U.S. 11), on the right when traveling west. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office area: Carlisle PA 17013, United States of America.
