This building was named for Albert N. Francisco (1821-1867) who gave up printing to join the search for gold, but pursuit of ideas drew him back to the typecase. At this site on July 1, 1854, he began publication of the Union Democrat which by his spirit survived to become one of California’s oldest newspapers.
