a famous Detroit politician who enlisted in the Marine Corps on this spot in 1917 at the ripe old age of 47! When he was discharged in 1919, he had risen through the enlisted ranks to the officer corps where he had obtained the rank of major. He was appointed Secretary of the Navy in 1921 by President Harding. He was forced to resign from his position after the "Teapot Dome" scandal.
