Inscription.
The Council Grove National Bank began August 23, 1878, as the Morris County State Bank of Kansas. It became a national bank in 1900.

An 1886 fire destroyed the bank, then located between the Hays House and this building. Constructed in 1887 at a cost of $15,000.00, this building served the bank until a 1978 fire damaged it. The main lobby was restored in 1978-79 to an appearance reminiscent of 1887.

Entered in the National Register of Historic Places on June 3, 1976.

Erected by G. F. W. C. Philomathian Club.
