This playground is dedicated
to the memory of "Aunt Gen"
who lovingly coached and guided the
boys and girls of the Hampton Park area
for over twenty years. Her legacy exists
in the children whose lives were forever
enriched by her kindness and example.

Regarding Genevieve Kanapaux McMahon. Born in Charleston to William Thomas Oscar & Mary Keegan Kanapaux, the sixth child of eight known children.
She attended Julian Mitchell and Memminger High School for Girls. She was very active in sports well into her
70's, especially tennis.She married Gerald Fredrick McMahon on Jan. 12, 1937 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the same church she was baptised in. She worked for a number of years for the Charleston City Playground Department. The playground along Rutledge Ave and Hampton park has been named after her.
Her husband, Gerald, died in 1948, leaving "Gen" to raise three children.
Age at death, Jun. 28, 1997: 85 years 8 months, 27 days
Funeral Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church of which she was a member
