July 27, 2011

The National Purple Heart Trail memorializes those heroic soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who have had the Purple Heart medal bestowed upon them in the name of the president of the United States for being wounded or forfeiting their lives in the defense of our nation.

The original Purple Heart, designated as the badge of military merit, was established by General George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, on August 7, 1782.

"Let it be known that he who wears the Purple Heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen."

The Delaware 14th General Assembly unanimously passed House Joint Resolution #21, signed by the Governor on June 26, 2008, proclaiming this portion of Interstate 95 through Delaware connecting Maryland and Pennsylvania and to be known as "The Purple Heart Trail".

"Freedom is not Free"

This trail is a national project of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) which is comprised entirely of patriots who have received the Purple Heart medal. The MOPH promotes principles of patriotism, dedication to duty
