1. Burgoyne Hopelessly Surrounded Marker
American patrols had cut off any communication with the outside world. There was barely enough food left to last the British army here a week. The field fortifications were indeed formidable, but the outnumbered defenders in the lines were bone weary and rain-soaked. Each passing hour tightened the Americans’ grip on eventual victory over their once powerful foes.
“ . . . they continued firing into us from [cannon] Batteries . . . and placed their riflemen in the tops of trees; but still did not venture to storm our works . . . We now began to perceive their design by keeping at such a distance, which was to starve us out.”
