1. The Oakes House Marker
Inscription. This home was built in stages 1866-1910 by John and Mary Oakes, free blacks who had moved to Yazoo City by the 1850s, and by their first son, Augustus J. Oakes, an educator and builder, who had established the Oakes Lumber Yard by 1900. The Oakes House was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
 
Erected 1995 by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
