Inscription.
Lanark Castle. . On this mound, site of an ancient Roman fortification, stood the Royal Castle of Lanark, a residence of David I (1124-1153), William the Lion (1165-1214), and later kings from which many of their royal charters are dated. It was the meeting place of the Scots Parliaments in 1293-4-5. The castle was occupied by the English under Edward I and Edward II, and was finally won back in the Wars of Independence.
