of American soldiers were collected some three years after the war and many buried here. This monument was placed in 1851, at the same time as the cemetery was constructed. An additional 873 later burials of Americans are included in the niches of the one-acre cemetery. It is currently managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission and has been closed to new burials since 1923.
