Head Coach Bernie Moore

After going 1-1 to open the season, Bernie Moore's Tigers did not lose again for the remainder of the regular season. LSU's high powered offense, led by Gaynell "Gus" Tinsley and Marvin "Moose" Stewart, keyed a destruction of Georgia in the SEC opened before the Tigers reeled off wins over Ole Miss, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Auburn and Southwestern Louisiana. LSU finished the regular season by whitewashing rival Tulane, leaving the Tigers as the nation's highest scoring team with 281 points, while the defense never gave up more than 7 points in a game. LSU finished runner-up in the first AP poll to Minnesota, but took national championship honors in the Williamson poll for the second straight year.
