19th Century Iron Mortar. .
Early 19th Century Iron Mortar. Fitted to a wooden gun carriage this mortar is fitted with a cascabel. This ring at the breech or back of the cannon was used to attach lifting tackle when mounting or un-mounting it from its carriage. The mortar's range is measured in hundreds of metres rather than thousands but it threw, or lobbed, a bomb and not solid shot. Aiming this bomb was a precise art, as the fuse that was fitted into the outer casing had to be exactly measured so that it exploded where and when the gunner wanted it. This mortar would have been used to defend the castle in the event that invaders landed on or attacked from the beach.
