Phelps in Ontario County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Phelps Methodist Episcopal Church
The early Phelps citizens who originally organized the "First Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church” constructed their first house of worship on this site in 1817, a wooden structure called the "Yellow Meeting House". Their second church, a substantial brick edifice, was constructed here in 1856 and served the Methodist community for over 110 years.
With the merger of the Methodist and Presbyterian congregations to the United Church of Phelps in 1974, the brick structure that stood here was razed in 1983, but not before relocating two stained glass windows that adorned the narthex of the Methodist Church to the narthex of the United Church. In 1989, the Village dedicated this site as "Methodist Memorial Park". The church's steepte bell is located on the Park's southeast corner.
Erected 2014 by Phelps Community Historical Society.
