Open Spaces: Room to Roam. July 27, 1806 Encampment. On July 24, while traveling through what is now Billings, Montana, Clark wrote, "for me to mention or give an estimate of the differant Spcies of wild animals on this river particularly Buffalow, Elk Antelopes & Wolves would be incredible. I shall therefore be silent on the Subject further..." But he continued to write about the huge herds they saw as they proceeded down the Yellowstone into the vast grasslands of the Great Plans. This land was in stark contrast to Clark's home in the eastern United States, which was covered by deciduous forest. The great open spaces and huge wildlife populations, estimated in the millions, must have resembled today's great African Serengeti Plain. . . The Buffalow and Elk is estonishingly noumerous on the banks of the river on each Side, particularly the Elk which lay on almost every point in large gang and are So jintle that we frequently pass within 20 or 30 paces of them without their being the least alarmd." -- William Clark, July 27, 1806 .
