Anyone concerned about the quality of construction at Pier 39 can see from these photos that Warren Simmons hired only the most highly skilled craftsmen. For fourteen months, this youngster toiled night and day, never receiving an ounce of pay. His reward - the first ride on the merry-go-round.
The youngster happens to be one of Simmons' grandchildren.
When lengthy legal battles threatened the existence of Pier 39, Simmons comforted stockholders and associates by firmly stating his grandchildren will be operating Pier 39 some sixty years hence.
"If these complex suits aren't settled out of court, our grandchildren will still be fighting your battles 60 years from now."
