1. Van Buren County Marker
Inscription. Martin Van Buren was President when the county was formed. When pioneer settlement began around 1830, commonly owned sheep and cattle roamed free. “If a person needed meat, he trailed down a cow and killed it.” Fall Creek Falls State Park offers “majestic cascades, deep chasms, virgin timber” and the tallest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Civil War genre painter Gilbert Gaul lived here amidst stands of tulip poplars and hemlocks at the edge of the Cumberland Plateau.
