1. Meigs County Marker
Inscription. Meigs County is long and narrow, wedged between No Pone Ridge on the east and the undulations of the Tennessee River on the west. The Tennessee is joined by the Hiwassee River that cuts across the southern portion of the county. Known for its fertile bottom lands, Meigs was part of the Hiwassee purchase of 1819. The county was named for Return Jonathan Meigs, Revolutionary War colonel and Indian agent for the Cherokee in 1801.
