Johan Limpers
Heemstede, 2 augustus 1915 - Overveen, 10 juni 1944
Sculptor Johan Limpers won the Prix de Rome at the end of 1940, the highest prize for artistry. Limpers was active in the artists' resistance together with his wife Katinka van Rood. Among other things, he founded the illegal magazine 'The Free Artist' together with Gerrit van der Veen. Limpers arranged hiding places, forged identity cards and carried out preparatory work for the national Resistance Council for sabotage actions and robberies.
At the end of March 1944, the Sicherheitspolizei found notes on a resistance fighter who had been shot dead. This led to the arrest of several resistance members, including Limpers.
On June 10, 1944, he was sentenced to death with six other members of the resistance and executed the same day.
