Victor Rutgers
's-Hertogenbosch, 16 december 1877- Bochum, 5 februari 1945
Lawyer, councilor, Member of Parliament, party leader, minister of education, mayor, professor and rector at the Free University. Victor Rutgers was a versatile man and put himself in the service of others. That's how he was in the thirties, when many Jews in Germany had fled, as chairman of the Protestant Relief Committee for Refugees of Race or Faith.
Rutgers was arrested three times, but was released each time. During a failed crossing to England, in an attempt to speak to the government, he was arrested by German patrol vessels. He was sentenced to two years in prison. Shortly before the end of the war, he died in prison in Bochum (Germany).
Erected by Geef Straten Een Gezicht.
