The Chinese art of penjing and the Japanese art of bonsai share roots in the traditional Asian reverence for nature. The close observation of trees and landscapes inspires this artistic interpretation of nature.

Over 1,000 years ago, Chinese scholars developed the art form called "penjing"—a scene or landscape in a container. Visit the Chinese Pavilion to view examples of both tree and rock penjing.

❸ Japanese Pavilion
The Japanese Pavilion features the masterpiece trees donated by the people of Japan in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial. This priceless gift included trees that have been training as bonsai for centuries.

Explore the North American Pavilion to discover the diversity of trees and artistic interpretations of nature from this continent.

In the winter, the subtropical bonsai and penjing are on display in the Tropical Conservatory. Most of the temperate zone trees are on view in the Chinese Pavilion, where they are protected from the extreme winter weather.
