1. U.S. M548 Cargo Carrier Marker

Inscription. Introduced in 1965, the M548 is the unarmored cargo carrier version of the M113 Armored Personnel Carrier. The M548 was used for carrying cargo, especially artillery ammunition to forward areas. Capable of carring up to 5.45 tons through rugged or swampy terrain the M548 was ideal for its use during the Vietnam War. The M548 was amphibious with the rubber side skirts providing floatation and the tracks propulsion. The crew compartment had room for the driver and three passengers. The ring mount above the crew compartment could mount either a M2 .50 caliber or a M60 7.62mm machine gun for self-defense. The A1 was introduced in 1982 with improvements in the suspension and cooling systems. In 1994, the M548 with a more powerful 275 horsepower diesel engine was introduced. The M548 series was gradually replaced by the Field Artillery Ammunition Supply Vehicle (FAASV) beginning in the late 1980s. M548A3s were still in service with some U.S. Army units in Iraq in 2005.
