When rabbis demanded that the Rambam's "Guide for the Perplexed" be banned, he fought for his grandfather and got the ban rescinded. He had the privilege of moving to Eretz Yisrael and settling in Acre, but when the city was captured by the Mamluks, he returned to Cairo, where he lived out his life. His work, "David Hanagid's Commentary on the Torah," became one of the best-known and most widely distributed works among Oriental Jews. , "Neither money nor gold nor property nor homes nor assets will serve man well in the World to Come. All that will help him are the Torah learning, good deeds and charity that he does in this word to the best of his ability, because G-d does not hold grievances against His creations, but judges each person only on his abilities and good deeds. These are the only things that man takes with him and that will help him in the World to Come and save him from the fires of Hell." (Commentary to Pirkei Avot, attributed to Rabbi David Hanagid), (Hebrew text not transcribed)
