World War II Tribute
World War II was the most devastating war in history. Savage combat transpired 1939-1945 between two alliances, the majority of the world's countries & 100,000,000 military personnel. The consequences were massive destruction & 70,000,000 - 85,000,000 deaths.
The United States entered WWII after military bases in the Pacific were attacked December 7, 1941, joining Allies in global warfare against Axis powers.
Of the 16,000,000 members of the US Military & Merchant Marine, 407,316 were KIA or MIA & 671,846 were wounded.
WWII required full mobilization of US economy, industry & labor force. Civilians created "Victory Gardens," rationed goods, & built a huge workforce to meet the enormous requirements for total war.
Warfare dominated the world until the US & Allies accomplished decisive victories to end hostilities. Germany surrendered May 8, 1945, followed by Japan September 2, 1945.
"They were only kids at the time, but now they are known as 'The Greatest Generation.'"
