The hotel opened here 1828 in Cabinet Member Marcus Gjøe Rosenkrantz's mansion dating from the 1790s. Burned down in 1859, rebuilt and in operation until the 1870s.

Later history (in translation): Elias Smith opened a hotel in the building in 1828. It became "the city's best" and a gathering place for parliamentarians, the leading citizens and artists, including Henrik Wergeland. The musical company "Lycæet" held concerts in the large hall.

In 1859 the hotel burned down and the new building had a completely different architectural design that broke with its surroundings. It

also never became as popular as the old one. In 1899, the building was converted into offices.
